What Does the Bible Say about Abortion?

Is it a sin? I want to look at what the Bible says concerning this topic.

The first is in Psalms 139:13-16 which reads, “For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.” When someone has an abortion, they are stopping God’s plan for their life.

In Exodus 21:22-25 we read, “If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.” The key phrase in this passage is life for life. Why point out the fact that the baby is there?  This was to show that if an unborn baby dies, there should be accountability. We should take care of God’s creation. God calls the unborn baby a life.

When Jesus was sent into this world, He was a, “fetus” in the womb of Mary. Yet we as Christians do not consider Jesus to be sent into this world as a fully developed baby, He was given at conception. If Mary were to be killed during this time, they would have killed Jesus not a lump of cells. The Birth of Jesus reminds us that life begins at conception.

Look at the way the Bible talks about John the Baptist while he is in the womb, “for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.” (Luke 1:15). See the words, “and he will be filled with the Spirit”. This shows us how John was alive. John even jumped in the belly of his mother Elizabeth when Mary visited her while carrying Jesus.

Is the Bible pro-life? Based on these Scriptures, the Bible consistently describes the unborn baby as a life. Some shout, “My body! My choice!” Yet throughout the Bible we can see that our body is not our own, it is God’s. It is really God’s choice. This body belongs to the Elohim, the creator of this universe.

Scripture is clear, abortion is a sin against God. Take time to seek the Lord on every decision. Just because something can be done, doesn’t mean it should. Give the choice to God. Remember that even while we were in the womb of our mother, God knit us. He counts the hairs of our head and has great love for us.
