Encouragement

The Gift of Encouragement

Anytime we are in a sports arena there will always be a reason for a good old high five. If your our team scores a touchdown, high five. If a teammate makes a good pass, high five. It is a sign of encouragement. As Christians we are called to a life of encouragement. We are called to lift others up and stand by each other’s side.

The Bible talks about the gift of encouragement. Paul gives a list of gift in Romans 12:5-8 which tells us, “so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement…” (NIV).

This word, “encouragement” is the Greek word, “paraklésis” which means, “a call to one’s side.” As believers in Christ we are called to be by each other’s side. Remember Eve was created out of Adam’s side, one of his ribs, to represent their equal standing. Eve was created not to be beneath or above him, but they were made to walk side by side. In the same way the Church is called to stand side by side.

We are called to bring joy to others. When someone does something well, we congratulate them. When we have been waiting for a promotion and someone else gets it, high five them. If you are faithful at what you do, your time will come. Maybe you have been praying for a new car and your relative gets a brand new one, be happy for them. Be thankful for what you have.

Living a life of encouragement is a satisfying life. It’s easy to constantly complain, it is refreshing to talk to someone who is thankful. I believe that it is only the message of the gospel that can change Bay City. The gospel is very uplifting and encouraging. When we realize what Christ has done for us, we will be a city of encouragement. It’s time to start high fiving one another. It’s time to start encouraging people about what Christ has done.
