Once upon a time, there lived a man named David, and like Martin Luther King, Jr. David had a dream. His dream was far-fetched and seemed unobtainable in His own strength… So, he counseled a wise man (God). He told God,
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10
His dream was sincere, but his timing was bad. You see, David lived almost a thousand years before Jesus. He dreamed of a day when his heart could be washed of its filth and shame. David wished he would have a new heart, a pure heart. David knew that one day this dream would come true, even if he would not be alive.
David’s dream is our reality.
People bring back the old covenant verse in Isaiah that says the following:
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? – Jeremiah 17:9
Now, let me ask you a question, is there a verse after the cross that says that our heart is desperately wicked? None, there is no verse after the cross that says our core is wicked. Why? Because Jesus removed your sin, when you accepted Christ! He wiped ALL of the dirt off of you, and He cleaned you better than a Dyson vacuum cleaner can clean your carpet! My Bible says,
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Are you in Christ? Then you are a new creation! Now, we cannot speak for the unsaved and their heart, but as for those who are in Christ, you are a new creation! Let’s think about what an old thing is… What are the old things God wanted to get rid of? Sin, shame, and your dirty heart are some of the old things God wanted to remove. God (like David) wanted to, “create a pure heart.” God wanted to remove the heart of stone and give us believers a heart of flesh.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you – Ezekiel 36:26-27
Many people say, “Caleb this verse is for the people of Israel, and it is not a promise for the new covenant.” So, let me explain why this is for us. In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit did not dwell, “in” the believer; He dwelt, “with” the believer. Go ahead search your scripture, as I have. You will not find one instance were the Holy Spirit was, “in” the believer in the Old Testament. The Holy Spirit was always, “with” the believer or, “among” the believer, but today the Holy Spirit is, “in” us. And, this verse in Ezekiel talks about how God will put the Holy Spirit in us. So, we can see that since this transfer of a new heart takes place in a time when God’s Holy Spirit is in people; it must be that this verse is for us today.
God has done his part. He didn’t lie when He said He would give us a new heart! So, for those who think your heart is desperately wicked, look at the bible. Is it really Biblical to put all your marbles in a verse that isn’t even relevant for today? Put your faith in the fact that you are a new creation, and you have been swept clean of every sin!
If you feel led to do something good, do it. If your passion is to sing, join a band and sing for God. If your passionate about guitar, play guitar. God has placed a brand new heart in you, and you are clean! Trust your heart.
