Are Christians Wicked?

Songs bring up interesting topics. For instance, Desperation Band has a song that goes like the following, “I feel like a blind man in your sight, I know that I’m wicked in your eyes.” This song brings up an interesting conversation. Those that believe we are wicked bring up the fact that we are sinners because we sin. I believe the main argument is the definition of word sinners. If the word sinner is defined as being someone who sins then, by definition, everyone is a sinner. But, the truth is the Bible never calls a believer, wicked. Are our actions always perfect, no. God does not see us as sinners because He remembers our sins no more.

I will make a new covenant… It will not be like the covenant
I made with their ancestors… I will be their God… I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more. – Hebrews 8:8-12

God is not in the anger business, as believers. He came into the world not to condemn the world but to love the world. If God has now cleansed you of your sins, why would He also say you are dirty. We may still do wicked things, but those sins are not in a big book in heaven. I like the NLT version of this verse that says,

Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD has cleared of sin. – Romans 4:8

Since God isn’t keeping track of your sins, He doesn’t see his children as wicked. We need to change our view! So, let’s look at a passage of scripture to understand what the Bible says.

This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. – Mathew 13:47-50

After one has received Christ it is not Biblical to say you are wicked because (according to Mathew 13:19) the wicked do not make it to heaven. It says the wicked are separated from the righteous. There are 2 kinds of people

  1.      The Righteous
  2.      The Wicked

The question is… Which one are you? Biblically you are righteous.

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. – 2 Corinthians 5:21

My friend God has cast all your sins as far as the east is from the west! God has made you a new creation.

  1. Sadly, I think Christians have the possibility of becoming wicked… in how they view the world, how they view others, and when anger strikes. It is very sad to me when Christians behave in ways that can be wicked, even with the best intentions. Having a heart after Christ is a full time job, to be sure.

    • Everything has to do with what we define as wicked or sinners. Some people define ourselves as wicked because we do wicked things. The Bible defines it a little differently. Because we were the seed of Adam we were all born sinners. Now that have received Christ, we are born again as new creations. We were all wicked before Christ came and forgave us. The goal of this post was to just to point out that we should not go around seeing ourselves as wicked. A better name to see ourselves by is, righteous. As believers have the capability to do wicked things, but we should not let these things define us. I hope that clears things up.

  2. Love your revelation – keep up the great work, Graeme
