I was listening to an “Ask the Pastor” session with JD Greer, and he said that, “God doesn’t need our money. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and if He needed money, He could sell one of His cows to provide.”
Overall, I agree with him, but this idea gets brought up often. Many people teach that God doesn’t need our money, yet they also teach that we are stewards of what God has given us. These two ideas don’t always go together. It’s either God’s money or my money. If we’re taking part of God’s money, then God needs us to help.
I guarantee that if everyone stopped donating to ministries or their local church, there would be a huge problem. So, yes—God does need your money. He needs your time and your effort.
Proverbs 19:15-16 says:
“Laziness casts into a deep sleep, And an idle man will suffer hunger. He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of conduct will die.” (Proverbs 19:15-16 NASB)
And Proverbs 19:17 says:
“One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, And He will repay him for his good deed.” (Proverbs 19:17 NASB)
Let’s ask this question: Did Jesus need water or oxygen? Yes, He absolutely needed both. He even fasted for 40 days and was tempted to turn stones into bread. We understand that Jesus allowed Himself to be in need. Similarly, yes, God does not necessarily need us in the sense that He will go without, but the truth is, God does need us. It’s improper to say that God doesn’t need our money.
God allows us to be a part of His creation and a part of His plan. when we donate and when we give to others, we are given to the Lord. What we do for the least of these, we do towards God. Instead of keeping 100% of all the money that you make, plan out in your budget how much you want to give away.
